I have a mac and need to ssh into a cloud server. Originally they gave me a ppk file for putty. Since I don’t have putty I told them that a ppk file would not work. They sent me a .pub file and the contents of a RSA file. When I try to use ssh -i xxx.pub user@IP address I first get the usual prompt about adding a host but then I get prompted for a password. I didn’t create the key so I don’t know the passphrase for the key. Should I be doing something with the RSA file? I really don’t know all the nuances of all the key types (.pem, .pub RSA, DSA, SSH etc…). Any help here would be great.

Thanks

WOW! you are way ahead of me. Probably no one will tell you
but in a year or two a new book for dummies will be out about it.

Hello,
Before I start this is only theoretical (to start with) so don’t talk to me about costs until I know what it all involves.

I want to run a website allowing people to buy photographs without hosting it on a third party server. I have read lots about DNS servers and Home Networks and Cloud Servers e.t.c. and I am getting very confused.
If I wanted to run a server from my house allowing me to run my website without third party hosting what would I need and roughly how would I connect it to the internet or whatever you do?

I am a new to this idea of servers so please could you just give me the basics, I don’t need this server to be fail safe (except against hackers) so if it goes down due to a power cut or I click the wrong button then it is fine providing it can get back up and running without harming any potential clients who buy from it.

Thanks!

The first thing you need is the actual web server but I’ll assume you already know that.

You will need to get with your ISP and pay for a static IP address. That’s so the address of your website doesn’t change. You can try using dynamic DNS but you’d probably a static IP much easier to deal with,

You’ll need to purchase a domain (mywebsite.com) and usually the people you buy the domain from can also setup your DNS. You need the DSN provider to map mywebsite.com to the static IP address you received from your ISP.

At that point, what’s left is security. By default people probably can’t get through your router to your webserver. You’ll need to forward port 80 and probably port 443 (for https) eventually.

At that point your server is reachable.

There are other things you’ll want to consider like the security of the server. If you do want people to send payment info you’ll want to get an SSL certificate so you can set up secure https connections.

But this covers the minimums to get reachable on the internet.
