.Chapter 1
It wasn’t the first time. He knew someone was following him. He was being watched. He wasn’t sure. But there was a terrible lump that had suddenly settled in his bowels. The hairs at the back of his neck stood erect as if threatening to jump off. His eyes shifted uneasily from time to time but he still saw nothing. No one.
A very loud roar of thunder reverberated though the cold air and startled him. Heavy drops of water pummeled at his cranium as if intending to inflict the maximum damage possible. Strong, frigid winds whipped at his wet frame. The anger of the dense clouds that had mustered and plunged the land below into a virtually implicit darkness had been released upon him with no mercy. He was thoroughly wet. Cold. Shivering. Scared.
Jared Hawkins was walking through the vast field of towering corn. He was wading through deep puddles of the dirty water that had that pooled along the narrow pathway. His shoes were extremely heavy, laden with sheer water. His satchel was even heavier now that all his voluminous text books were soaked out-and-out. But what surpassed the weight of these two combined was probably his conscience.
Jared was extremely stressed. Troubles never rained but poured – literally. He had just had an awful day at school. He had managed to get himself suspended. All because he was caught with a half-empty bottle of alcohol. He didn’t really regret drinking. He regretted the fact that he was caught. Now he and his two friends had all gotten suspended pending further hearings. It was most likely he was going to be expelled. He didn’t care.
Jared’s mother, who worked as a waitress in a crappy diner on the outskirts of town, Meera, had been called to be informed of Jared’s delinquent behavior. It’s a good thing she needed the extra hours and could not afford to leave her workplace for a second or else she’d regret the reduction in her salary for the rest of her days. And she’d blame it on Jared like she did everything else. So, anyway, Meera hadn’t come.
Jalal, Jared’s father, was the worst drunkard the world has ever had the misfortune to host. He was a big, angry nothing. No future. Ugly past. Lazy and good for exactly two things, complaining and complaining. He would always find fault in everything anyone does. Especially Jared.
Jalal spent the better part of his life sleeping if he was not drinking himself senseless. He probably was home when the school called to tell him about Jared’s unruly actions. The phone must’ve rang many, many times, but, fortunately for Jared, Jalal must’ve been too lazy to just push the answer button.
Ultimately, the school had to release him after he had sat idle for at least six hours in the principal’s office. This was a most unpleasant experience as angry teachers, who deemed it necessary to just barge in and give him a pathetic telling-off, were flooding throughout the day. It was like a riot protesting against an organization with crappy initials.
Jared gasped. Frightened. A flash of lightning had momentarily illuminated the darkness. Elongated shadows of the towering corn briskly and briefly crept on the ground like bodiless fingers. But that is not what had alarmed Jared. He had been consumed deep in his thoughts while dragging himself through the heavy rain when he felt an abrupt power surge course through his whole body. It was unnatural and always uncontrollable.
Yes. Jared had always known he was never your average, normal teenager. He looked and acted like all the other sixteen year olds, but there was a form of power deep inside him he did not fathom. A power, he was sure, could not be described as a mutant ability like in all those movies. It was far more graver than that. Far more powerful. And much more unstable. Inexplicable. 
Like how electrical equipment always go haywire or explode when he is angry. Or how he could sometimes move objects without touching them, just thinking it. Or, when it rained, he felt electrical charges move through his flesh. Sometimes they would even escape through his fingers in weird bursts of what resembled miniature versions lightning forks.
And at that moment, sparks flew out through his hands and scorched a couple of holes on the very wet pair of jeans he had on. Anger soared and settled hard in his chest. Heaving. He was suddenly certain this particular storm was not natural. He could not understand how he figured that but the way his energy was building because of it was even more unnatural. Disturbing, even. He sometimes thought his power was cool but it always manifested itself on the wrong occasions. And since his family was a messed up disaster, and he didn’t want to risk losing his friends by revealing such a secret, he told no one.
Another flash of lightning was followed by especially loud volleys of thunder so that the wintry surrounding became an expanse of crashing sounds. The lightning momentarily illuminated the place and out of the corner of his eye, Jared saw something move.
He turned and looked. He became frozen stiff. There, right in front of him, was a shadow of a figure in a hooded cape. That much was pretty obvious. But what was not so obvious or comforting was how it was just a shadow. No physical body. Made entirely of deep and dark shades of shadows. Moving, virtually undetected, through the dense shadows of the corn. Not an illusion. But it vanished when lightning flashed and back again when there was darkness.
Jared panicked. He took a few unconscious steps backwards. His stomach had turned into knots and veins on his forehead bulged as he stood, staring at the pool of gothic shadows that were supposed to be his stalker. What scared him worse than anything was knowing he had been right all the ot

It’s very good. You’re use of vocabulary is excellent. You have captivated the reader and you make them want to read on. My advice to you is that you should include paragraphs otherwise it does get quite tedious. Please email it to me when you’re done. Carry on you’re doing fantastically.
