How can I get a certain effect look in Macromedia Fireworks?

February 192010

I have an image which was given to me to edit for a website, however I don’t know how to do it. I need to be able to change the image in the background (currently clouds) to something else, however maintaining the grey striped through look on the top of it. How would I do this?
The image I am talking about is currently hosted at the following address: poowong.org.au/callum/sky.jpg

Any hints/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Callum

Fireworks is a great program for image manipulation (Superior to photoshop in my opinion). Here are some awesome tutorials I have found:

Sounds like you might want to start from scratch, but you can also use the lasso tool to cut out sections you would like to reuse. Good luck!

if it isn’t a vector you would have an easier time editing it with photoshop and then importing it into Flash. Flash can’t do much to bitmaps.

I’m thinking you need to build that from the ground up. It’ll probably be easier to do than editing that image, and you’ll get a better quality at the end.

Try laying out the grey blocks on either side, and the image, and then making a pattern of diagonal stripes to fill over the image. Then try a blending mode, like multiply or maybe screen or soft light, with a transparency to get that look. It might take some tweaking and experimentation, but I think if you keep trying different settings, you’ll get something close.

And it might be easier to do it in Photoshop rather than Fireworks.
