What is Heroku? What is cloud hosting?

I see from their website that it seems like a cloud platform, but I’m not sure what that constitutes. I am familiar with web hosting, can someone explain how cloud platforms like Heroku relate to deploying applications in relation to web hosting? Is one a replacement for the other?

First time to heard the name Heroku, but for cloud hosting or any related terms, google is always your friend.

Virtual Tape Library or Tapes Drives?

I was wondering if anyone still used tapes to backup their servers. I’m currently looking into a VTL (Virtual Tape Library) but I didn’t know if it was worth it or if I should buy cloud hosting.

Tape, VTL or cloud it will largely come down to the financial analysis. Tape continues to be the most cost effective over the long term since tape systems are typically not replaced as frequently as disk systems (VTLs are disk based systems) and a tape cartridge doesn’t require much power or cooling when sitting in a rack/library. VTLs may offer advantages that could speed up your backups (many mount points), speed recoveries and coupled with deduplication technology and off-site replication more than meet your needs. The costs will be significantly higher compared to tape…but it is up to you to determine if the additional features are worth the expense. When you say cloud hosting are moving primary and backup data to the cloud or just backup data? There are many challenges with either approach starting with bandwidth and the potential costs to obtain enough bandwidth so you can meet your throughput needs. Backup would be less bandwidth sensitive so long as you have enough to meet backup windows.

can i use a cloud service to host my own vb .net application?

You can, but the cloud will have its own API so that you can use it their way. You can’t, for instance, use your knowledge of php coding that works for you. No, you have to learn their specific way to host on their cloud.

The other drawback I didn’t like is they charge per seek-request. Thus, if you write code with 1,000 seeks to look up one price, that can be pricey at .009 cents per seek. One has to be diligent about efficient code.

What is this online stick figure game called?

You have to draw a stick figure first. The commands after that are like, draw a balloon, draw some rain clouds and draw a sword (not sure of order). The really cool thing about it was that they actually animated (albeit crudely) your drawings to make them move. Also, the game was hosted on it’s own website.

This is it:

How do I choose the best web hosting options?

I have been with a hosting provider for years and they said that I’d get benefits with vps hosting. Unfortunately, now, I write to report that my pages are not loading and they said that the problem is that others on the node are causing the problem and that the only way to avoid that is to get dedicated hosting. It’s hard enough to afford the vps hosting as it is at $55/month for 40GB of storage. If their servers are too overloaded, shouldn’t they fix that and get more hardware or better pipe to the internet?

So, can someone (1) explain the differences between shared, vps, cloud, dedicated and (2) suggest where I can get a better price or equivalent price for much better performance. Just try http://futurewavedesigns.com
or http://wordsaladonline.com/w/
Thanks,
Bruce

As an experienced webmaster I recommend BH web hosting which I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer for hosting & I have used them for over 4 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them.

What are the taxes involved with advertising?

A little background on why the question: I am participating in a case competition and the hypothetical situation involves a gaming company who has decided to switch from selling its product via CD to cloud computing. Our goal is to analyze the tax implications of this switch (e,g, the distinction between "good" and "service") and what not. The case states that the company has high confidence in the potential of the game to become incredibly popular.

Just for argument’s sake, say instead of dealing with the varying definitions of "good" and "service" in different counties and states, we make the game free, and we generate revenue through advertising instead.

What are the taxes involved with advertising? Assuming all our revenue is now generated through advertising, is our income taxed? How does location affect taxation on advertising services, as in are sales and use taxes, if applicable, according to the state in which the company purchasing the service is located, or where the server hosting the ads is located?

I hope the general idea of my question is here. I am by no means a tax expert; I just wanted to get some feedback as research on this topic is giving me a lot of contradictory (or incomprehensible) information if you are not a tax law expert.

First, in regard to advertising as a business promotion activity, not all advertising is going to qualify as a business tax deduction. Only the cost of advertising in newspapers in some countries television, radio and web sites can be deducted.

Questions about….. William worsworth "I wanderd lonley as a cloud"…….?

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

1. What do poets do when they personify subjects? Identify the subject that is personified in this poem, and describe how it is personified. Then explain how personification helps the poet to convey his ideas about the natural world.

I think to personify means to give an object, a thing, something which makes them seem alive or human.

For example, the daffodils "dance" in the breeze. Obviously plants and flowers do not dance, but William Wordsworth makes them seem alive, makes them dance, which makes them seem human. He personifies them.

Hope I’ve helped.
Love,
<3

Thanks WP that really helped me understand.

Poets give inanimate objects qualities and characteristics of people when they use personification.

The cloud is personified.

The cloud is described as feeling loneliness….but only people can feel loneliness. Thus the cloud is personified.

Personification, in this poem, helps connect us to the natural world.
